Game 52

On the other side of the road

The first time abroad

The game's question

Read it slowly, piece by piece, then hold up both hands like a mirror.

Here, we have always driven on the left, with the steering wheel on the right. Then came a holiday across the Channel, or a film set in France, and the cars seemed to go back to front, as if in a mirror. At the first roundabout, nobody knew which way to look. In France and almost all the rest of Europe, which side of the road do people drive on?

  • On the left
  • On the right
Need a hint?

Hold out your hands as if on a steering wheel and do the opposite of home. Then ask whether your mum or dad ever drove abroad, or saw it in a film.

See the answer

Answer: On the right – the mirror image of the roads at home.

Why this game : Our own road habits, seen in a mirror – the surprise of the other side of the road often opens a holiday story.
