Game 53

Where the blade should point

Good manners at the table

A video by William Hanson

The game's question

Unfold the clues gently, then choose together, as if laying the table for Sunday.

Round the table, small details mattered, and table rules were passed on. You learnt early to put the knife on the right of the plate, and how to turn its blade the way you had been shown. It was simply good manners. Which way did the blade of the knife have to face?

  • Towards the plate
  • Away from the plate
Need a hint?

Lay a knife on the table and turn the blade in, then out. One way looks friendly, the other looks like a threat. Who taught your mum or dad these table rules?

See the answer

Answer: Towards the plate – the polite way, never pointing at your neighbour.

Why this game : Table rules handed down – who taught them, and how, is a story in itself.
