Game 56

The stalls on market day

Once or twice a week

A video by British Pathé

The game's question

Let the sounds and the smells of the stalls come back before you circle anything.

Once or twice a week, the market came to town. From early morning the stalls went up: vegetables stacked in pyramids, fruit piled high, the cheese stall. You walked there and chatted on the way. And to carry it all home, you took the same bag every time: soft, full of big holes, so you could see the shopping through it. What was it called?

  • A string bag
  • A rucksack
  • A trunk
Need a hint?

Hold up an empty hand: the bag hardly weighed a thing, then it filled up at every stall. Which stall did your mum or dad always stop at first?

See the answer

Answer: A string bag – light when empty, bulging by the last stall.

Why this game : Market day gathers many memories at once – the bag, the stalls and the walk home.
