The man who made the sparks fly

A bell in the street

A video by Memory Lane Heritage Village

The game's question

No hurry with these clues – listen for his bell between each one.

A travelling craftsman walked the streets, ringing his bell. He called out that he would sharpen knives and scissors, and people came out with their blades. With his foot on a pedal, he turned a stone wheel, and sparks flew as the metal touched it. What was this man called?

  • The knife grinder
  • The rag-and-bone man
  • The glazier
Need a hint?

Press a foot up and down as if on a pedal, while your hands guide a blade against the wheel. Listen for the bell, and watch for the sparks.

See the answer

Answer: The knife grinder – his stone wheel turned by foot, sparks flying.
