Game 67

Sheets flapping in the wind

Dried in the fresh air

The game's question

Take your time; let the picture of the sheets in the wind come back before you circle.

As soon as the fine weather returned, the washing went outside. A long line stretched across the garden or the yard, and each piece was hung up with wooden pegs. The sheets flapped in the wind. In the evening you folded them against you, and they kept that lovely fresh-air smell. Where did the washing dry in those days?

  • On the washing line
  • In the tumble dryer
  • At the dry cleaner’s
Need a hint?

Pinch two fingers like a wooden peg and hang a sheet in the air, then breathe in the smell of washing dried outdoors. Did your mum or dad help to hang it out, or to fold it?

Answer: On the washing line – held by wooden pegs, drying in the sun and wind.

Why this game : Washing dried in the sun has a smell all of its own – the smell of a whole washday.
