The BBC on Saturdays

A video by David Baldwin
One of you reads the story aloud, slowly; the other stops the reading as soon as a face comes back.
Saturday night, the whole family in front of the telly. From 1955 to 1976, on the BBC, ‘Dixon of Dock Green’ came into the living room, and Jack Warner played the policeman George Dixon in all 432 episodes. He would turn to the camera and greet everyone at home. True or not true: George Dixon said ‘Good morning, all’.
Ask yourselves what time the programme was on, then what a polite policeman would say to you at that hour.
Answer: Not true – it was ‘Evening, all’, said straight to the camera.
Why this game : Every Saturday, a face the whole family trusted – and with it the living room, the armchairs and who sat where.
