Everyday Life
Clean linen, folded neatly

A video by HuntleyFilmArchives
At your own pace, move through the story and stop as soon as the object comes to you.
Clean was not enough: the sheets had to be perfect. You heated the heavy object, then held it near your cheek to feel whether it was hot enough. Then you pushed it back and forth over the sheet laid flat, until it slid without a crease. The smooth linen, folded in a pile, went into the cupboard with some pride. What did you smooth the linen with?
Move your hand slowly back and forth over the table, then lift it near your cheek to feel the heat. Who did the sheets at home, and who did the shirts?
Answer: The iron – heavy and hot, held close to the cheek before the first sheet.
Why this game : Ironing lives in the hands – a real skill, and with it the busy washdays of those years.
