Game 60

News at the front door

Twice a day, in all weathers

A video by British Pathé

The game's question

Read each clue aloud and stop as soon as you can see him at the door.

Long before a phone in every pocket, news came through the door. Twice a day you listened for footsteps on the path, then the letterbox rattled. A familiar figure with a heavy bag on his shoulder brought letters from far away, and sometimes a card from the cousins. You knew his face, in all weathers. Who brought the post to the house?

  • The postman
  • The baker
  • The milkman
Need a hint?

Knock twice on the table and pretend to push a letter through a slot. The same man every day, rain or shine. What did your mum or dad most look forward to from him?

See the answer

Answer: The postman – twice a day, with his bag over his shoulder.

Why this game : Faces from the street stay with us, and so does the joy of a letter landing on the mat.
