Game 75

Keeping the fire going all winter

Warm by the grate

The game's question

Clue after clue, let the warmth of the room come back before you answer.

In winter, the whole house gathered round the fire. It was made up in the morning and banked up again at night, and slippers were set near it to warm. To keep it going, a man delivered heavy black sacks, carried on his back, his face darkened with dust. What did you call him?

  • The coalman
  • The chimney sweep
  • The blacksmith
Need a hint?

His name comes from what he carried in those black sacks. The chimney sweep, for his part, cleaned the chimney; he never brought the fuel. Who lit the fire at home in the morning?

See the answer

Answer: The coalman – black sacks on his back, his face dark with coal dust.

Why this game : The warmth of the fire is a memory of the body – naming the man who fed it calls up a whole trade that has gone.
