The game's question

Take the clues slowly, one after the other, as neatly as a copybook page.

In the corner of the school desk, a small round hole, and in it a little pot of ink. You dipped, you wiped the nib on the edge, you started again and you blew on the page to dry it before it smudged. Fingers ended up stained, and the blotting paper did the rest. The thing you dipped had a nib and a wooden handle. What was it called?

  • A ballpoint pen
  • A dip pen
  • A pencil
Need a hint?

Three letters for the first word – the very thing you did with it, over and over. Ask your mum or dad about the smell of the ink, or a blot on a clean page.

Answer: A dip pen – dipped, wiped on the edge, then a careful line.

Why this game : An object held every school day brings back the gesture, the smell of ink and the pride of careful handwriting.
