Game 106

Roast chestnuts and smoke

Burnt fingers on a cold night

The game's question

Take the scene slowly, at the pace of a cold evening by the bonfire.

Autumn had its own smell: smoke and something sweet, chestnuts roasting until their shells split. On 5 November, the bonfire crackled, faces glowed in the heat and fireworks lit up the sky. Hands were cold, chestnuts too hot to hold. Where did you eat roast chestnuts – from a street seller or by the fire – and who looked after the bonfire?

Your own autumn evenings

Need a hint?

Toss an imaginary hot chestnut from hand to hand, or ask who took charge of the fireworks at home.

Why this game : A smell of smoke and autumn can carry a whole evening with it: the cold, the fire and the faces round it.
