A lesson from school

A video by British Pathé
Look at the three numbers side by side; the running track in the hint may help.
Learnt at school, this measure served all your life: for a walk, a journey, the sign at the side of the road saying how far to the next town. The road counted in miles, and the school ruler and the playing field in yards. So, how many yards are there in one mile?
Four laps of a 440-yard track made a mile – so it is not a round number. Did your mum or dad walk or cycle long distances when young?
Answer: 1,760 – so a quarter of a mile is 440 yards.
Why this game : Finding a measure learnt long ago brings back the school ruler, and the long walks and bike rides of years gone by.
